BEATBoX SAX Derek Brown Playing at James Logan High School Tonight! (3/13/19)

The James Logan High School Jazz Band is proud to have saxophonist innovator Derek Brown as a guest performer at their concert tonight.  With 30+ million views across social media and interviews on international television and NPR’s Weekend Edition, Derek Brown and his one-of-a-kind solo “BEATBoX SAX” project has been exploding across the world music scene.

As described by jazz journalist/historian Scott Yanow, “Brown performs unaccompanied solos that occasionally make one recall Bobby McFerrin in his early prime and the great saxophonist Eddie Harris . . . utilizing slap-tonguing, circular breathing, a wide interest in musical styles and dazzling coordination to create rather unique music.”

Crossing genres from jazz to classical to funk, without looping or electronic effects, Derek Brown’s unique playing style must be seen to be believed!  Here’s one of his many videos:

The James Logan High School Jazz Band provides a rich opportunity for those students wanting to explore their musical creativity. The band is open to students in grades 9-12.
